5-day Alliance Strike Started Today, UFCW Pharmacy Workers Take ULP Strike Authorization Vote

Kern Admin

On October 14, UFCW 770 members working under the Kaiser - Kern County Administrative and Clerical contract reached a tentative agreement at the local table. The agreement includes improved longevity premiums paid at 10, 15, 20, and 25 years of service, improved paid bereavement leave, and language recommitting Kaiser to resolving grievances at the lowest level possible. We defeated management’s attempt at doubling the probationary period to six months, and locking new hires into their positions for up to two years, without transfer rights, as well as its proposal to cap lateral transfers for non probationary employees at two per year. We also added MLK day to holidays, and eliminated all gender specific references to members.

While this is a tentative agreement at the Kern Admin table only, we are not done. Our work continues until the national agreement is complete.

Kern Main
Kaiser - Kern County Main members remain far apart on both local and national issues, but are continuing to negotiate. Kaiser has not agreed to union proposals to ensure that members performing work outside of the job descriptions are compensated fairly, and have a pathway to adding appropriate new job classifications during the life of the contract. They have only committed to “meet and discuss” the issue. They have also not agreed to create stable full-time jobs in departments where part-time, on-call, per diem and/or temporary employees are working full-time hours. Without a fair resolution on these issues, there will be no agreement.

What’s next?

Our UFCW Pharmacy siblings are currently taking Unfair Labor Practice strike authorization votes against Kaiser for engaging in UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES in an attempt to weaken our ability to achieve a fair contract at the bargaining table. Please show your support as they take this crucial vote.

Meanwhile, Alliance unions OFNHP, UNAC/UHCP, USW Local 7600, UNITE HERE Local 5, and HNHP remain on strike until Sunday, October 19. Reach out to your local union for information on how to support an Alliance strike line near you before/after your shift, or on your lunch break.

Kern members – while your contract doesn’t expire until next year, and you can’t strike at this time, please support your Alliance siblings by signing up to join a picket line before/after your shift or on your lunch break: UNAC/UHCP Strike Support

The pause in LMP Partnership continues. Until further notice, UFCW will suspend participation in LMP councils, committees, and initiatives, while continuing all contractual meetings and grievance processes.

In Solidarity,

Your Kaiser Kern Bargaining Committee
